Treacle Soda Farls

Soda farls are definitely a Northern Irish thing, but treacle soda farls take it to another level. My Nanny and I have a real soft spot for treacle and these are a favourite. It doesn't over power the taste in the slightest. But adds a deliciously rich, molasses-like flavour with a deep, slightly caramel-like taste. Then you get a few sweet and chewy sultanas which are the perfect accompaniment. These fresh off the griddle, with real butter and some cheese are a real favourite of mine.

Step 1

Sift your flour, caster sugar, salt and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl, mixing together. Add your butter to this and work through the dry ingredients with your fingertips. This will create a light airy breadcrumb. Add your sultanas if you'd like them but it's optional.
