Wheaten Bread

This bread is known by so many names and it doesn't matter if you're from the North or the South of Ireland. Whether you call it wheaten bread, soda bread or brown bread, all I know is you need to make it yourself. The recipe is so simple and only has four ingredients unlike your shop bough equivalent. This fresh with real butter and jam is a real treat. I've a favourite combo with this stuff, buttered with slaps of ham, buckets of coleslaw and seasoned well with salt and pepper. It's simple but trust me, it will soon be your go to.

Made the wheaten, beautiful, though a bit stodgy inside, what did I do wrong? Thanks!

It looks great Susan 🙌🏻 Sometimes it can come down to our ovens as they differ so much, so maybe a slightly longer bake. A good tip is to tap the bottom and if it sounds hollow it's in a good spot 👍🏻 You'll get it nailed after a few attempts I'd say! It's wild the difference in my Nanny's oven to the one here at home 😅

Hi Maggie, you can use normal milk and add some lemon juice to it to give you the buttermilk 🙌🏻

I make a loaf of this wheaten bread alongside every batch of soup for an easy and comforting meal. Also goes great with butter and jam in the morning. Thanks for the straightforward recipe for this staple!

Jonny this recipe is so easy to follow. Thanks a million. Have you ever subbed in Greek yogurt for the buttermilk?

Those look delicious Claire! Love the rustic look on top, proper traditional wheaten bread right there. That's the beauty of homemade, it's that tasty it lasts no time. Love to hear it and be sure to keep those photos of your creations coming.
